How OpenSpace AI Is Bringing Visual Intelligence to Construction Sites

Date:

OpenSpace AI is using computer vision and spatial AI to give construction teams a clearer, real-time view of their projects. The company was co-founded by CEO Jeevan Kalanithi along with Mike Fleischmann and Philip DeCamp, who met at the MIT Media Lab while studying AI and machine learning.

The platform captures complete visual records of job sites using 360-degree cameras, drones, smartphones and laser scanners. It turns this data into useful workflows, integrates with tools such as Procore and Autodesk, and converts images into progress metrics like percent complete and schedule tracking. Its AI AutoLocation feature works like indoor GPS, automatically pinning observations to the right spot on a drawing. Site walkthroughs are processed in about 15 minutes on average.

OpenSpace now hosts over 69 billion sq ft of imagery, with around 30 million images uploaded each week. This growing dataset continuously improves the accuracy of its AI.

Its customers include general contractors, specialty trades, project owners and the oil and gas sector. Kalanithi argues construction isn’t slow to adopt technology; rather, software was never “built for builders.” He sees visual intelligence becoming a core pillar of construction software, helping reduce mistrust, risk and payment delays across the industry.
