The Maharashtra government plans to develop and operate four state-owned ports along the Konkan coastal belt. The proposal is part of the state’s Viksit Maharashtra 2047 initiative, which sets out its long-term development goals.
State Ports Minister Nitesh Rane said the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) is preparing a blueprint for the project. Under the plan, one port each will be set up in Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.
The initiative marks a clear shift from the current model. At present, the state leases coastal land to private operators, who take charge of developing and running the ports. The new government-owned facilities are intended to give Maharashtra a more direct role in building and managing its maritime infrastructure.
Separately, the state already holds a 26 percent stake in the Rs 76,000 crore Vadhvan Port project near Dahanu in Palghar district. That port is targeted for completion by 2030.
If implemented, the four-port programme could strengthen coastal logistics and boost cargo handling capacity. It could also support industrial development in the Konkan region and improve connectivity, helping Maharashtra make fuller use of its long coastline.
