India Updates Vehicle Rules to Support E85 and E100 Ethanol Fuels

Date:

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to support the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles running on high-ethanol fuels such as E85 and E100 in India.

The updated rules officially include E100 alongside E85 in vehicle emission certification provisions. Vehicles designed for these fuels must meet the applicable emission and safety standards.

E85 contains up to 85% ethanol blended with petrol, while E100 refers to fuel consisting predominantly of ethanol. Flex-fuel vehicles are specially designed to operate on different petrol-ethanol blends using a single fuel tank. Their fuel systems and engine controls adjust to the approved fuel composition.

The move aims to reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil and encourage the use of domestically produced ethanol. Depending on the feedstock and production process, ethanol-based fuels may also help reduce certain exhaust pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions.

However, the new rules do not mean that every petrol vehicle can use E85 or E100. Only vehicles specifically designed and certified for these fuels are eligible. Compatibility with E10 or E20 petrol does not automatically make a vehicle suitable for higher ethanol blends.

MoRTH has also clarified that existing vehicle owners do not need to modify their vehicles or switch fuels. Motorists should check their vehicle’s fuel compatibility sticker and owner’s manual before choosing an alternative fuel.

The amendment marks another step towards expanding India’s ethanol-based transport options and strengthening energy security.
