SWITCH Mobility and Purple Bus have expanded electric intercity transportation in Maharashtra with the launch of a new electric bus service connecting Nagpur and Chandrapur in the Vidarbha region.
The launch, held on October 20, 2026, marked the deployment of the first six SWITCH EiV12m electric coaches from an order of 50 buses planned for operations across Vidarbha. The initiative aims to strengthen regional connectivity while providing passengers with a cleaner alternative to conventional diesel-powered intercity travel.
Designed for long-distance journeys, the EiV12m electric coach features 45 pushback seats, a claimed driving range of up to 350 kilometres per charge and fast-charging capabilities. The buses also incorporate safety systems and connected technology to support efficient fleet operations.
This development marks the third electric intercity deployment by SWITCH Mobility and Prasanna Purple Mobility Solutions in 2026, following earlier launches on the Mumbai–Pune and Dombivli–Pune routes.
Purple Bus has reported that its electric intercity fleet has covered more than 10 lakh kilometres. According to the company, its operating experience indicates potential cost advantages over diesel-powered buses, including lower total cost of ownership and cost per passenger-kilometre.
The latest deployment highlights the growing role of electric mobility beyond urban public transportation. As the remaining buses are introduced across Vidarbha, the partnership aims to expand sustainable travel options and improve connectivity between important regional centres.
The initiative represents another step towards making electric intercity transportation a practical and scalable option for passenger mobility in India.
