The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reported progress on the twin-tunnel construction under Phase 3(B) of the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project in Mumbai, aimed at improving east-west connectivity across the city.
According to the latest update, excavation work has advanced by 183 metres, while the second tunnel boring machine is expected to begin operations by the end of October 2026.
The twin tunnels will pass beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park, connecting Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in Goregaon (East) with Amar Nagar in Mulund (West). The underground corridor is a crucial component of the wider GMLR project, which seeks to provide a faster connection between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs.
The first tunnel boring machine, named Tulsi, was commissioned in August 2026. Since commencing operations, it has recorded an average excavation rate of 5.5 metres per day.
Construction teams have also installed 87 segmental lining rings and six temporary lining rings to support the tunnel structure and maintain stability during excavation.
Once completed, the twin tunnels are expected to improve traffic movement between Goregaon and Mulund, reduce travel times and ease congestion on existing road networks.
The GMLR project is part of Mumbai’s broader infrastructure development efforts to strengthen road connectivity and improve commuting efficiency across the city.
