Eight years after its launch, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) 24×7 water supply project continues to fall behind schedule, with only 25 of the planned 82 overhead water tanks commissioned so far. While PMC officials report that construction of 66 tanks is complete, 41 remain non-operational due to incomplete supply-line connections. Civic authorities point to land acquisition hurdles as a primary factor in the delay.
“The civic administration is generating funds for the project. The funds will be used for building connecting lines between water tanks and taps of end users,” said Nandkishor Jagtap, head of PMC’s water supply department. He added that additional financing is being arranged to expedite the completion of remaining pipelines.
The project involves an investment of about ₹280 crore for tank construction, with capacities of 20–40 lakh litres. So far, 700 km of the planned 1,060 km distribution network is complete, and 70% of the 3.14 lakh water meters are installed. Spending has reached ₹1,471 crore of the ₹2,048 crore budget.
PMC officials now project that physical construction will conclude by December 2025, with full operationalisation achieved by March 2026. Meanwhile, residents remain hopeful that the long-promised uninterrupted water supply will soon become a reality.
