The Central Government has approved an allocation of ₹72.4 million, or ₹7.24 crore, for berth development at Kollam Port in Kerala. The funding will support the construction and strengthening of key berth infrastructure, aimed at improving vessel docking facilities and reducing turnaround time.
The investment forms part of broader efforts to upgrade India’s coastal and port infrastructure and enhance the operational capabilities of smaller and regional ports. Improved berth facilities are expected to support smoother vessel operations, strengthen cargo-handling efficiency and improve overall port connectivity.
Kollam Port holds strategic importance for Kerala’s maritime and coastal trade activities. The proposed infrastructure development could help increase the port’s capacity to accommodate vessels more efficiently while supporting future growth in cargo and coastal shipping operations.
The funding approval also reflects the government’s continued focus on strengthening maritime infrastructure and improving port-led connectivity across the country. Upgraded facilities at regional ports can play an important role in supporting coastal trade, reducing logistics costs and creating new economic opportunities for surrounding areas.
With the new allocation, berth development at Kollam Port is expected to receive a significant boost, contributing to the modernisation and long-term operational development of the port.
