In a major step toward improving public transport infrastructure, the Odisha government has directed urban local bodies to transfer the management of bus stands to the Commerce and Transport Department under the newly introduced Atal Bus Stand (ABS) Scheme. The move aims to create a more streamlined and efficient transport system while upgrading passenger facilities across the state.
With an investment of approximately ₹3,400 crore planned through 2031-32, the scheme will focus on modernising existing bus terminals and developing new ones in key locations, including district headquarters, urban centres, tourist destinations and high-traffic transit points.
The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) will be responsible for implementing and managing the initiative. Bus stands will be classified into different categories based on passenger movement and transport demand, allowing for better planning and infrastructure development tailored to specific requirements.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve commuter experience by offering cleaner, more organised and better-equipped bus terminals. Centralised management is also likely to enhance operational efficiency, maintenance quality and long-term sustainability.
By bringing bus stand operations under one department, Odisha is taking a forward-thinking approach to public transportation development. The Atal Bus Stand Scheme reflects the state’s commitment to strengthening connectivity, boosting urban mobility and creating a more passenger-friendly transport ecosystem for the future.
