Flying Buses Could Be India’s Next Public Transport Innovation: Gadkari

Date:

India’s public transport system could be heading towards a futuristic transformation, with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighting the possibility of introducing “flying buses” as part of the country’s next-generation mobility plans.

Speaking at an event in Lucknow, Gadkari said the government is looking at emerging technologies to modernise transportation and address challenges such as traffic congestion and urban connectivity. His remarks have sparked interest because flying public transport could represent a significant shift from conventional road-based mobility.

The idea comes as India increasingly explores alternative transportation technologies, including electric mobility and advanced air-transport solutions. While flying buses may sound futuristic, electric flying vehicles are already moving from concept to testing. Chennai-based ePlane Company, for instance, has unveiled a full-scale electric flying taxi prototype, with flight trials and a potential commercial launch planned in the coming years.

However, turning the flying-bus concept into a practical public transport system would require substantial technological development, safety standards, infrastructure, regulatory frameworks and affordable operating models.

For India’s rapidly growing cities, the bigger question is whether mobility can move beyond roads and into the air. Gadkari’s statement signals that the government is at least willing to consider unconventional technologies as it imagines the future of Indian transportation.
