The Jammu and Kashmir Mining Department has granted 205 mining leases through e-auction to support the availability of construction minerals for infrastructure and development projects across the Union Territory.
According to the department, 204 leases are for riverbed material (RBM) blocks, while one covers an in-situ mineral deposit. The move is aimed at ensuring a lawful and timely supply of materials such as sand, aggregates and other minor minerals required for roads, bridges, tunnels, railway projects and other public infrastructure works.
The government has also established mechanisms through e-auctions, quarry licences, Short-Term Permits and disposal permits to facilitate the supply of construction materials to project-executing agencies and contractors.
At the same time, mineral extraction remains subject to environmental and statutory requirements. Riverbed material extraction is prohibited during the monsoon period from July 1 to September 15, in line with applicable guidelines.
The department says mining activities are being monitored through digital systems, GPS-based tracking, electronic transit passes and other surveillance mechanisms. District-level task forces are also involved in monitoring operations and addressing illegal mining.
The development highlights the importance of maintaining a reliable supply of construction minerals while balancing infrastructure requirements with environmental safeguards and regulatory compliance.
