India’s Construction Equipment Grey Market Crosses ₹4,000 Crore

Date:

India’s construction equipment industry is facing a growing challenge from the unauthorised export of machines, with the grey-market trade estimated at nearly ₹3,900–4,550 crore annually. Industry estimates suggest around 6,500 construction machines, including nearly 5,000 excavators and 1,500 backhoe loaders, were exported through unauthorised channels last year.

The primary driver is price arbitrage. Construction equipment purchased in India can command significantly higher prices in overseas markets, creating an attractive margin for traders. However, such exports can create serious technical and brand-related concerns for manufacturers.

A major issue is the use of BS5-compliant machines in markets where high-sulphur diesel is common. Equipment designed for low-sulphur fuel can face breakdowns when operated with unsuitable fuel, potentially affecting customer confidence and brand reputation.

Manufacturers are now turning to technology and tighter controls to curb the problem. Telematics and remote tracking systems can alert companies when machines approach ports, while some manufacturers have restricted sales of export-prone models. Dealers are also conducting additional customer and worksite verification.

Meanwhile, the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (ICEMA) has approached port authorities to seek stronger validation mechanisms for equipment being shipped overseas.

The issue comes even as legitimate construction equipment exports grew 32% last fiscal year, highlighting the need to protect India’s growing global manufacturing reputation from unauthorised trade.
