India’s Grey-Market Construction Equipment Trade Crosses ₹4,000 Crore

Date:

India’s construction equipment industry is stepping up efforts to curb the growing grey-market export of heavy machinery, a trade estimated to be worth over ₹4,000 crore annually. Industry estimates suggest that around 6,500 machines, including excavators and backhoe loaders—are being exported through unauthorized channels, bypassing manufacturers and authorized dealer networks.

The practice is largely driven by price differences between India and overseas markets, allowing traders to earn significant profits. However, these unauthorized exports create challenges for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including loss of revenue, limited after-sales support and potential damage to brand reputation when machines operate in conditions they were not designed for. For example, BS5-compliant equipment exported to countries using lower-grade fuel may experience reliability issues.

To counter the problem, manufacturers are increasingly deploying telematics and GPS-based tracking systems that can identify machines moving toward major ports. Several OEMs have also tightened dealer verification processes and restricted sales of models most vulnerable to diversion. Industry bodies are simultaneously working with authorities to strengthen export monitoring and improve traceability.

As India’s construction equipment sector continues to expand its legitimate global footprint, the adoption of advanced tracking technology and stronger regulatory oversight will play a critical role in protecting manufacturers, customers and the industry’s long-term growth.
