Construction of Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi Tunnel Road Gains Pace, Promises Major Relief for Kerala Travellers

Date:

Kerala’s ambitious Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi four-lane tunnel road project, designed to ease the persistent traffic bottlenecks on the Thamarassery Ghat, is progressing at a rapid pace. Estimated at ₹2,134 crore, the project aims to create a smooth, all-weather route through the state’s challenging hilly terrain, offering a safer and faster alternative to the existing stretch.

Bhopal-based Dilip Buildcon has secured the primary construction contract for the tunnel, while Punia Construction Company is responsible for building the crucial bridge across the Iruvazhinji river. The Public Works Department (PWD) is overseeing the development, with funding support from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

The 8.73 km tunnel—set to connect Wayanad and Kozhikode districts—is expected to significantly improve inter-district connectivity and reduce travel time for daily commuters, freight movement, and tourists alike. Officials estimate a four-year completion timeline, contingent on the current pace being maintained and favourable site conditions.

Once operational, the tunnel is poised to transform travel across the region by cutting down traffic congestion, improving road safety, and ensuring seamless year-round access. The project is widely viewed as a landmark infrastructure upgrade for Kerala’s hilly districts.
