Naharkatia Municipal Board Launches Crackdown on Roadside Parking and Construction Material Dumping

Date:

The Naharkatia Municipal Board in Dibrugarh, Assam, initiated a stringent enforcement drive targeting unauthorized roadside parking and the illegal dumping of construction materials in public spaces. A public notice was issued, directing vehicle garage owners and residents to immediately remove vehicles and construction debris obstructing public areas. Non-compliance will attract penalties under the Assam Municipal Amendment Act, 2024, and the Assam Municipal Act, 1956.

Executive Officer Bishal Phukan highlighted the hazards posed by garages occupying roads, which force pedestrians onto busy streets, increasing the risk of accidents. Chairperson Pompi Saha emphasized that builders and homeowners misusing footpaths for storing materials endanger pedestrians, especially children and the elderly. Violators may face substantial fines or confiscation of materials.

To regulate parking, the board has designated specific municipal parking zones and prohibited random roadside parking of two- and four-wheelers. Enforcement measures include random inspections, fines, and potential confiscation of materials. These actions aim to enhance pedestrian safety and ensure smoother traffic flow in Naharkatia.
