BMC Allocates Maximum Funds to Infrastructure, but Transparency Remains a Challenge

Date:

Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has allocated a record portion of its budget to infrastructure development, emphasizing the city’s need for better roads, bridges, drainage systems, and urban transport. Despite this focus on modernizing the city’s infrastructure, concerns over transparency and accountability in fund utilization persist.

Key projects such as road repairs, flyover construction, and stormwater drainage upgrades are expected to receive significant funding. The BMC has also outlined plans for boosting public amenities and enhancing disaster preparedness in the face of growing urban challenges.

However, civic activists and residents have raised questions about the lack of clarity in how these funds are being allocated and monitored. “While the budget allocation is encouraging, the absence of detailed project timelines, audits, and public consultation is a major concern,” said a local activist.

Calls for stricter checks and open data sharing on project progress and expenditures are growing louder, as citizens demand greater accountability from the civic body. As Mumbai gears up for these ambitious projects, addressing transparency issues will be critical to ensuring trust and the efficient use of resources.
