IIT Madras Launches AMOLED Research Centre to Revolutionize Display Technology

Date:

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has inaugurated the AMOLED Research Centre (ARC), a cutting-edge research facility dedicated to advancing AMOLED display technology. Funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Tata Sons, the centre aims to bolster India’s self-reliance in display manufacturing.

The ARC will focus on enhancing AMOLED displays used in smartphones, tablets, watches, and wearables. It seeks to improve brightness, reduce battery consumption, and achieve superior colour accuracy and contrast. Leveraging the ‘economies-of-speed’ approach, the centre is working towards efficient and cost-effective manufacturing processes, enabling modular micro-factories for production.

S Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, emphasized the centre’s vision of developing next-generation displays, stating that this initiative aligns with India’s goal of becoming a global leader in advanced technology. Beyond displays, the ARC aims to create prototypes for OLED lighting and organic photovoltaic (OPV) power sources, contributing to sustainable innovation.

Equipped with a state-of-the-art cleanroom and advanced fabrication tools, the ARC invites interdisciplinary collaboration to pioneer groundbreaking solutions, furthering India’s position in the global technology market. This initiative marks a significant step toward technological self-reliance and excellence.
