The Maharashtra government has finalised the rehabilitation housing entitlement for eligible residents of buildings and chawls under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, one of the largest urban renewal projects in the country.
The state urban development department issued the final notification under Regulation 33(9)(A) of the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR), 2034. The notification sets out how much housing space eligible occupants will receive once the area is redeveloped.
Under the revised rules, each eligible occupant will get a minimum carpet area of 300 sq ft, along with additional area that includes 35 percent fungible area. This takes the total size of each rehabilitation flat to about 500 sq ft, well above the 300 sq ft typically offered to such residents earlier.
The redevelopment covers about 10,000 tenements in mostly private buildings and BMC estate properties, along with another 10,000 tenements in chawls.
The decision follows a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, where the project was asked to propose a minimum rehabilitation area of 500 sq ft. The final notification gives residents clarity on their entitlement and marks an important step towards redeveloping Dharavi.
