Chief Secretary K Vijayanand has directed state power utilities to prepare for anticipated electricity demand increases, with the 960 MW Polavaram Hydel Power Project targeted for early commissioning by June–July 2027.
During a high-level review meeting, Vijayanand stressed the need for careful scheduling, increased renewable energy integration, and grid stability. The state projects daily power demand will reach 250–260 million units by March, with peak loads approaching 14,000 MW.
The Polavaram project is advancing swiftly, with six to seven of its 12 planned units expected online by mid-2027 and full completion scheduled for December 2028. Most major equipment has been mobilized, while powerhouse and infrastructure construction proceeds rapidly.
The facility will feature 12 Kaplan turbine units, each generating 80 MW, contributing approximately 23 million units daily. This renewable energy addition will provide substantial annual benefits, strengthening the state’s clean energy capacity and enhancing grid reliability during peak demand periods.
The strategic focus on renewable integration and infrastructure development aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply as the state experiences growing electricity consumption.
