India’s rising number of road fatalities has sparked renewed concern among road safety experts, policymakers and researchers. At a recent national seminar, experts strongly advocated for the adoption of evidence-based speed limits as a crucial step toward reducing road crash deaths across the country.
Speakers highlighted that speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal road accidents in India. Despite improvements in road infrastructure, speed limits are often set without sufficient consideration of traffic composition, road design and the safety of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler riders. This mismatch, experts warned, significantly increases the risk of severe injuries and fatalities.
The seminar emphasized that speed limits should be determined using scientific data, including crash statistics, vehicle types, road usage patterns and human tolerance to impact forces. Experts recommended lower speed limits in urban areas and mixed-traffic zones, while allowing carefully regulated higher speeds on access-controlled highways.
Participants also stressed that revising speed limits alone is not enough. Effective enforcement, public awareness campaigns and safer road design are equally important to ensure compliance and lasting impact. International case studies presented during the seminar showed that data-driven speed management policies can lead to substantial reductions in road deaths.
The seminar concluded with a call for authorities to integrate evidence-based speed regulations into national road safety policies. If implemented effectively, such measures could play a vital role in saving thousands of lives each year and making Indian roads safer for everyone.
