The Central Government has approved a world-class marina harbour project at Mumbai Port, with a total outlay of ₹887 crore. The project will be developed under a Hybrid Development Model, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced at a recent event.
According to the minister, the tendering process for the project has already begun, with December 29 set as the final date for submission of bids. The approval reflects the government’s strategic intent to strengthen maritime infrastructure in Mumbai and position the city as a global hub for marine tourism.
Under the hybrid model, the Mumbai Port Authority will invest ₹480 crore, while the remaining ₹417 crore will be mobilised through private sector participation under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. The marina will be spread across 12 hectares and will have the capacity to berth 424 yachts, primarily catering to recreational watercraft.
The project is expected to prioritise hospitality and tourism alongside port operations. As per official estimates, it will generate over 2,000 jobs across marina operations, cruise services, hospitality and allied sectors.
Key facilities to be developed by private operators include a marina terminal building, Namo Bharat International Sailing School, marine tourism development centre, hotel and clubhouse, skill development centre, and yacht storage and repair infrastructure. The initiative is also aligned with India’s broader maritime economy and coastal tourism goals.
