Indian Railways has approved a ₹167 crore project to construct a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Alkapuri in Vadodara, Gujarat. The project is planned to strengthen connectivity between Alkapuri and Kalaghoda while addressing congestion near the existing railway crossing.
The project will be jointly funded by Indian Railways and the Gujarat Government on an equal cost-sharing basis. Both sides will contribute approximately ₹83.28 crore towards the construction.
The proposed ROB will address several limitations of the existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge (RUB), which has a vertical clearance of around three metres. The restricted clearance limits the movement of larger vehicles, while waterlogging during the monsoon can disrupt traffic.
The four-lane grade-separated crossing is expected to provide greater road capacity while allowing railway operations to continue without disruption. It will also improve access to Vadodara Railway Station, the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation bus station and the upcoming High-Speed Rail station.
Traffic assessments indicate peak-hour movement of more than 1,600 Passenger Car Units per hour in the area. The existing crossing also has multiple traffic conflict points and inadequate pedestrian facilities.
The new ROB is therefore planned to provide a more efficient crossing, improve road connectivity and support smoother movement around the railway station and adjoining areas of Vadodara.
