India’s logistics and e-commerce ecosystem received a significant boost as Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that the Department of Posts has operationalized an all-India road transport network to support the country’s rapidly growing parcel and e-commerce sectors. The initiative forms part of India Post’s broader transformation strategy aimed at becoming a modern, technology-driven logistics organization.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Scindia highlighted that the Department of Posts has implemented the Mail Parcel Optimization Project (MPOP), a major initiative designed to improve efficiency across the entire parcel value chain. Through this project, parcel networks and delivery centers have been rationalized, enabling faster movement of goods and improved last-mile connectivity across the country.
A key component of this transformation is the introduction of the Advanced Postal Technology (APT) platform, launched in 2025. The platform enables real-time tracking of parcels and digitization of postal services, providing greater transparency and convenience for customers, businesses and e-commerce sellers.
The modernization efforts have already delivered measurable results. According to the government, the number of parcels handled by India Post increased from 9.72 crore in FY 2020-21 to 14.5 crore in FY 2024-25. This growth reflects the increasing role of India Post in supporting online commerce, logistics operations and business shipments across urban and rural India.
To further enhance delivery efficiency, India Post has introduced new guaranteed delivery services, including 24-hour and 48-hour delivery options on selected domestic routes. These services are expected to improve customer satisfaction while helping businesses meet growing consumer expectations for faster deliveries.
The Department has also focused on strengthening India’s export ecosystem. Through the establishment of Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras (DNKs), India Post is enabling MSMEs, farmers, artisans and e-commerce sellers to access international markets more easily. Additionally, the International Tracked Packet Service supports cross-border e-commerce by providing reliable tracking and delivery solutions for overseas shipments.
Another notable aspect of the strategy is collaboration with major e-commerce platforms and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). These partnerships are expected to create new opportunities for businesses while expanding the reach of India’s postal logistics infrastructure.
The government’s vision is to transform India Post into an integrated national logistics network capable of competing in a rapidly evolving market. By investing in infrastructure modernization, digital technologies, transportation networks and strategic partnerships, India Post is positioning itself as a critical enabler of India’s digital economy and e-commerce growth.
As online shopping, digital trade and export-oriented businesses continue to expand, the modernization of India Post could play a pivotal role in improving logistics efficiency, reducing delivery timelines and creating new growth opportunities for businesses across the country.
