Dream, a new AI startup focused on architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), has come out of stealth with $17 million in seed funding. Andreessen Horowitz led the round, with participation from SV Angel, XYZ and Zigg Capital.
The company is building what it describes as built world models, AI systems that can automatically design and engineer entire buildings. Unlike general-purpose AI image tools, which can produce attractive but structurally unreliable visuals, Dream’s model is based on real physics and construction standards. It has been trained on over 100 million square feet of building data sourced from permit archives across the US, allowing it to account for materials, load-bearing capacity and internal systems such as plumbing and HVAC.
Dream is already being used by AEC professionals and developers to conceptualise designs and estimate project costs, with deployments across 10 active projects in Texas and California. The startup hopes to replace legacy design software such as Autodesk’s AutoCAD and Revit.
Dream was founded by Andy Elder and Arjun Mathur, former Stanford roommates who spent a decade at Palantir. The duo was motivated by the steady decline in US building activity amid rising development costs.
