Govt Declares 100% Subsidy on EV Charging

Date:

Today marks a bold stride in India’s journey toward a greener future. The Central Government has unveiled a scheme that offers a 100% subsidy for setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the country.

Under the flagship PM E-Drive scheme, the government has earmarked ₹10,000 crore to boost electric mobility. Within this, about ₹2,000 crore is specifically reserved to support the hardware and infrastructure needed to charge EVs. This includes subsidies for charging stations, battery swapping stations, cables, mounting structures, civil works and other essentials.

The government allows Central Public Sector Enterprises, state bodies, Union Territories and PSUs to propose locations for charging stations. These entities may directly set up and maintain infrastructure or partner with charge-point operators. Several ministries, such as Power, Road Transport and Highways, Housing and Urban Affairs and Railways, are also involved in pushing proposals.

This is a commendable step. It sends a clear signal: India is serious about sustainable transport and is ready to invest in the future. With cost barriers removed, more private players and public bodies can take part. The subsidy will accelerate the pace at which EVs become practical, especially in smaller towns and remote areas.

Such infrastructure growth will encourage citizens to switch to electric vehicles with confidence. As tons of fossil fuel emissions are cut, cities become cleaner and healthier. In the years ahead, India’s leadership in clean mobility may become a shining example around the world.

We welcome this move wholeheartedly and urge prompt, efficient execution so that every street may one day host a charging point.
