Rs 951 Crore Sanctioned for Tura Bypass, A Boost to Northeast Connectivity

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved ₹951.27 crore for constructing a 29.03‑kilometre bypass around Tura town in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on June 15. Designed as a two‑lane highway with paved shoulders, the bypass will connect NH‑127B at Sanchonggre village to NH‑217 at Jenggitchakgre village, rerouting traffic away from the congested urban core.

NH‑217 (formerly NH‑51) links Guwahati to Dalu on the India–Bangladesh border and includes an inland customs checkpoint. The project aims to separate through‑traffic from local vehicles, improving safety and mobility in Tura’s narrow, traffic‑burdened town centre.

The bypass is expected to significantly enhance freight movement, regional connectivity, and cross‑border trade efficiency. Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma has welcomed the move, thanking the central government for addressing a long‑standing regional demand.
