India Begins Construction of Second Spaceport in Tamil Nadu

Date:

India has taken a significant step in its space journey with the commencement of construction for the country’s second spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu. This facility, spearheaded by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is expected to enhance India’s satellite launch capabilities, particularly for small satellite missions.

Unlike the existing Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, this new spaceport will facilitate direct southward launches, reducing fuel consumption and costs for polar orbit missions. The strategic coastal location of Kulasekarapattinam offers an unobstructed flight path over the Indian Ocean, making it ideal for such missions.

The development of the spaceport aligns with India’s growing ambitions in the global space economy. It is set to support the burgeoning private space sector and provide a boost to local infrastructure and employment. Once operational, this facility will position India as a more competitive player in the small satellite launch market, further solidifying its reputation in space exploration.
