The Sagarmala initiative

Date:

The Sagarmala initiative, launched by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in 2015, is reshaping India’s maritime landscape through port-led development. This flagship program provides financial aid to State Governments and Union Territories for projects that enhance port infrastructure, coastal connectivity, and community welfare in coastal regions.

Key focus areas include building coastal berths, improving road and rail links, and developing fish harbours. The initiative also invests in skill development and social upliftment programs to empower coastal communities. Advanced projects, such as Ro-Pax ferry services and world-class cruise terminals, reflect Sagarmala’s commitment to innovation and global standards.

Harnessing the potential of India’s vast 7,500-kilometer coastline, Sagarmala aims to boost logistics efficiency, expand port capacities, and promote economic growth through maritime trade. The program’s holistic approach integrates infrastructure development with regional progress, positioning India as a leader in global maritime trade and logistics.
