RVNL Advances Orange Line of Kolkata Metro Towards Crucial Phase

Date:

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of the Orange Line of the Kolkata Metro by completing the basic work for the underground tunnels along the median of VIP Road. The progress covers a 72-meter stretch, preparing the project to curve towards the airport in its crucial next phase.

To ensure minimal disruption on the vital VIP Road, RVNL has devised a phased construction approach for the New Garia-Airport Metro corridor. A new road stretch has been developed to facilitate Kolkata-bound traffic, and a five-day traffic trial is expected next week. Following successful trials, Bidhannagar traffic authorities will hand over the site for the next stage of construction.

The mostly elevated 29-meter Metro corridor transitions into its final leg, where a 300-meter ramp and 500 meters of twin underground tunnels will be built using the cut-and-cover method. This segment, executed by contractor Afcons, is critical to connecting the city seamlessly to the airport.

The Orange Line project signifies RVNL’s commitment to efficient urban connectivity while mitigating traffic challenges, ensuring Kolkata’s commuters experience minimal inconvenience during this transformational infrastructure development.
