India Advances Tunnel Infrastructure with ₹49,000 Crore NHAI Projects Underway

India is witnessing significant progress in its tunnel infrastructure development, with around 75 projects worth ₹49,000 crore currently under construction. Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, highlighted these advancements during the ‘World Tunnel Day 2024 Conference on Safe & Sustainable Tunneling.’

These ongoing projects span 146 kilometers, underscoring the crucial role of tunnels in the country’s infrastructure growth. Additionally, 78 more tunnel projects, costing ₹1.10 lakh crore and covering 285 kilometers, are in the planning stage. The Minister emphasized that these developments will enhance connectivity and boost economic growth.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already completed 35 tunnel projects with a total length of 49 kilometers, amounting to an investment of ₹20,000 crore. Speaking about future initiatives, Gadkari announced a visionary project under the Brahmaputra River. “Two days ago, I had a meeting with the Chief Minister of Assam. We are planning to construct a massive tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River,” he shared.

These advancements highlight India’s commitment to building safe, sustainable, and state-of-the-art tunnel infrastructure, which is set to revolutionize transportation and connectivity in the country.
