AI and Digital Technologies to Cut Construction Costs by 2-3%: L&T Construction

Date:

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Construction is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce project costs by 2-3%, according to R. Ganesan, Head of the Corporate Centre. Speaking to businessline, Ganesan highlighted that advancements in AI, including generative AI and predictive analytics, are transforming the construction industry by improving planning, resource management, and safety.

“Over the past five years, we’ve built a robust digital ecosystem integrating AI and conventional data science to optimise construction operations,” Ganesan said. AI’s predictive capabilities reduce waste in critical materials like steel, cement, and diesel, ensuring cost efficiency. For instance, AI-driven models optimise steel cutting to minimise scrap and digitise diesel monitoring to curb misuse and spillage.

AI also improves on-site safety through computer vision and deep learning models that monitor workers’ adherence to safety protocols. These technologies prevent accidents and minimise work stoppages, enabling smoother project execution.

L&T has reported incremental benefits, including environmental improvements, enhanced safety, and better project timelines. While these innovations have already shown measurable results, Ganesan believes full-scale adoption will unlock even greater efficiency and cost savings in the future.
