The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of the four-lane, access-controlled Barabanki-Bahraich section of National Highway-927, a landmark infrastructure project expected to significantly strengthen trade and connectivity between India and Nepal. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) stated that the highway will provide seamless access to the strategically important Rupaidiha Land Port and Nepalgunj, one of the busiest cross-border trade gateways between the two countries.
The upgraded corridor is expected to reduce travel time between Barabanki and Bahraich by nearly 50%, from around 150 minutes to approximately 75 minutes, while allowing vehicles to travel at higher average speeds. Improved road infrastructure will enable faster movement of goods, reduce logistics costs and minimise spoilage of perishable agricultural products such as vegetables and dairy items.
The project is also expected to benefit exporters, transport operators, farmers and local businesses by enhancing supply chain efficiency and supporting smoother cross-border trade. Better connectivity will improve access to markets in both India and Nepal, encouraging economic activity in the surrounding districts and generating new employment opportunities.
Beyond trade, the Barabanki-Bahraich highway will strengthen regional connectivity, improve travel safety and support long-term infrastructure-led development in Uttar Pradesh. As a key segment of NH-927, the project is poised to become an important catalyst for economic growth and closer India-Nepal cooperation.
