Chenab Bridge: World’s Highest Rail Bridge Nears Completion in Jammu and Kashmir

Date:

In a remarkable display of engineering and architectural mastery, the Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir is set to become the world’s highest rail bridge, adding grandeur to the already breathtaking landscape of the region. Spanning the mighty Chenab River, this upcoming mega-project stretches approximately 13,115 meters and towers at an impressive height of 359 meters, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower.

Connecting Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district, the Chenab Bridge is an integral part of the ambitious Katra-Banihal rail line, a crucial segment in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project aimed at enhancing connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. This bridge represents a significant step in bridging remote areas with the rest of India, fostering economic growth and social development in the region.

The project achieved a major milestone in 2022 with the completion of the ‘Golden Joint,’ symbolizing the joining of the two sides of the arch. This was followed by extensive track-laying efforts and a successful trial with track-mounted vehicles in 2023. The upcoming final phases include safety tests and operational readiness assessments, which are expected to bring the bridge closer to its anticipated operational date, solidifying India’s engineering excellence on the global stage.
