The Delhi government has requested the Centre to bring the strategically important Mandi Road under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for comprehensive development and better connectivity across the National Capital Region.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has written to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, seeking National Highway status for Mandi Road. The proposal aims to improve infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion and strengthen connectivity between Delhi and neighbouring cities.
The nearly 8.8-kilometre stretch connects Mehrauli-Gurugram Road (NH-148A) near Chhatarpur Metro Station with the Gurugram-Faridabad Road near the Delhi-Haryana border. The route plays an important role in daily movement between Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad, supporting both commuters and economic activities.
According to the Delhi government, transferring Mandi Road’s development responsibility to NHAI would allow better planning, improved engineering standards and faster execution of road improvement projects.
The proposal for widening and upgrading the corridor has also received support from the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Centre (UTTIPEC), which recognised its importance for future traffic needs.
The Chief Minister highlighted that modernising this corridor would provide smoother travel experiences, reduce pressure on existing routes and support the growing transportation requirements of the Delhi-NCR region.
If approved, the initiative could become a significant step towards improving regional mobility and strengthening infrastructure links between major economic centres around the capital.
