Construction of the long-awaited Chennai Port–Maduravoyal Elevated Corridor has entered a fast-track phase, with authorities aiming to complete the project by November 2027. The major infrastructure initiative is expected to strengthen cargo movement from Chennai Port while easing freight-related traffic congestion across the city.
Developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the 20.5-kilometre four-lane elevated expressway will provide a dedicated route for container trucks traveling between Chennai Port and the region’s highway network. The project is expected to improve export-import logistics by enabling faster and more efficient cargo transportation.
Originally proposed more than a decade ago, the corridor experienced significant delays due to legal challenges, environmental issues, and design revisions. However, the project has now resumed with updated plans, fresh approvals, and renewed execution efforts.
Once completed, the elevated corridor will reduce the movement of heavy vehicles on city roads, particularly in areas surrounding the port. This is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance urban mobility, and lower congestion levels. The project will also offer better connectivity to industrial hubs and inland markets across Tamil Nadu and neighboring states, helping logistics operators reduce transit times.
To meet the completion deadline, authorities are implementing multiple construction packages simultaneously while carrying out utility relocation, drainage improvements, and continuous project monitoring.
