Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) is set to finalize a new 20-year master plan for Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) within the next two to two-and-a-half months. The updated blueprint will serve as a long-term strategy to guide the airport’s future expansion, infrastructure development, and operational planning.
The master plan is being developed after extensive consultations with airlines, industry stakeholders, and airport users. According to DIAL officials, the new roadmap will reflect major changes in the aviation sector since the previous plan was approved in 2016. It will consider evolving passenger expectations, shifting airline networks, and the impact of market changes, including the exit of carriers such as Jet Airways and Go First.
As part of regulatory requirements, airport operators are required to submit an updated master plan every ten years. Once finalized, DIAL will present the revised strategy to the Ministry of Civil Aviation for review and approval.
IGIA remains India’s busiest airport and a key aviation hub. The airport currently handles more than 1,300 aircraft movements every day. During FY2025-26, it served approximately 78.7 million passengers, including 57.2 million domestic travelers and 21.5 million international passengers, highlighting its growing importance in supporting India’s expanding air travel market.
