Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase-2 expansion has reached another important construction milestone with the successful underground breakthrough of tunnel boring machine (TBM) “Servarayan” near Moolakadai in north Chennai. The achievement marks steady progress in one of India’s largest urban infrastructure and metro rail development projects.
The breakthrough is a key advancement for Corridor-3 of Chennai Metro’s under-construction 118.9-km Phase-2 network. The underground tunnelling work for the first nine-kilometre stretch between Madhavaram Milk Colony and Kellys is being executed by Tata Projects, which has deployed seven tunnel boring machines for this package.
TBM Servarayan (S99) completed excavation along the down line connecting Madhavaram High Road station to Moolakadai station, successfully tunnelling approximately 824.6 metres before reaching the Moolakadai North shaft. This marks the ninth TBM breakthrough achieved by Tata Projects under the TU-01 contract package.
With this latest accomplishment, Chennai Metro has now recorded a total of 23 tunnel breakthroughs across its ongoing Phase-2 expansion program. The progress highlights the city’s continued push toward strengthening public transport infrastructure, reducing urban congestion, and improving connectivity through a modern, large-scale metro rail network designed to support Chennai’s future mobility needs.
