Delhi has taken a major step toward sustainable urban mobility with the induction of 500 new electric buses, strengthening its position as the city with the largest electric bus fleet in India. With this addition, the capital now operates over 4,000 electric buses, surpassing other states in the transition to clean public transport.
The newly added buses have been deployed under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to improve last-mile connectivity, reduce congestion and offer commuters a quieter, cleaner and more efficient travel experience. The expansion reflects the government’s focus on reducing vehicular emissions and addressing the city’s long-standing air pollution challenges.
The buses were flagged off at Ramlila Maidan, marking a symbolic push toward greener infrastructure. In addition to strengthening intra-city routes, Delhi has also launched an inter-state electric bus service between Delhi and Panipat, providing an eco-friendly option for daily commuters travelling between the two regions.
Officials highlighted that the rapid electrification of the public transport network has helped Delhi overtake Maharashtra in electric bus deployment. The move aligns with the city’s long-term vision of transitioning fully to zero-emission public transport.
Looking ahead, the government plans to further scale up the electric bus fleet, supported by expanded charging infrastructure and a dedicated electric vehicle policy. The initiative is expected to significantly cut carbon emissions, lower operating costs and improve the overall quality of urban transport in the national capital.
