The World Bank has approved technical and financial assistance worth ₹5,700 crore for the Jal Sanrakshit Haryana Project, a major water infrastructure initiative aimed at making Haryana self-reliant in the water sector. The funding will be released in phases between 2026 and 2032 and will primarily support large-scale canal construction and restoration works across the state.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini stated that Haryana has already made steady progress in canal restoration over the past two decades. Of the state’s 1,570 canals, 892 have been restored so far. This includes 115 canals rehabilitated using ₹2,325 crore of World Bank assistance, 284 canals funded through ₹2,230 crore from the state budget, and 279 canals supported by ₹2,880 crore via NABARD. The remaining 678 canals are planned to be completed within the next five years under the ongoing project framework.
The upcoming construction and restoration activities will be financed through a combination of World Bank funding, state allocations, and NABARD support. In addition to major canals, the project also targets minor canal infrastructure, with around 1,961 minor canals proposed for restoration. The initiative further includes the introduction of micro-irrigation systems across nearly 70,000 acres, drainage solutions for waterlogged areas, and measures to promote sustainable agriculture through crop diversification and water-efficient farming practices across Haryana.
