In 2025, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways continued to play a critical role in strengthening India’s infrastructure and economic momentum. The year marked steady progress in expanding road connectivity, improving travel efficiency and supporting regional development.
India’s National Highway network grew to 1,46,560 km, reinforcing the country’s position among the largest road networks globally. A major highlight was the sharp expansion of access-controlled expressways, which reached 3,052 km, reflecting a transformational leap over the last decade. These corridors are helping reduce travel time, improve road safety and lower logistics costs for businesses.
Flagship programmes such as Bharatmala Pariyojana, the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for the North-East and focused road development in Left Wing Extremism-affected regions continued to drive inclusive infrastructure growth. These initiatives improved connectivity in remote and border areas, supporting economic integration and social development.
While highway construction activity moderated toward the end of the year due to execution and sectoral challenges, the ministry maintained emphasis on project quality, timely execution and asset management. Increased focus on asset monetisation, externally aided projects and improved maintenance frameworks also helped strengthen long-term sustainability.
