The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new framework that allows premier government research institutions to access National Highway infrastructure and operational data, marking a significant step toward technology-driven infrastructure development in India. The initiative is designed to encourage research, innovation and the development of smarter solutions for highway planning, construction, maintenance and safety.
Under the new framework, approved government institutions will receive standardized sample datasets covering up to 2,000 kilometres of National Highways. Researchers can use this data to conduct pilot studies, validate innovative methodologies and demonstrate practical applications that can improve highway performance and management.
The data made available includes infrastructure details, traffic patterns, pavement conditions and operational information while ensuring compliance with privacy and security standards. By enabling access to real-world highway data, NHAI aims to support evidence-based decision-making and accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and digital infrastructure management.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of building safer, more durable and cost-effective road infrastructure. It is also expected to strengthen collaboration between NHAI and leading institutions such as IITs, NITs, and other government-funded research organizations, fostering innovative solutions that can enhance road safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency across India’s expanding National Highway network.
