The upcoming four-lane access-controlled Barabanki-Bahraich section of National Highway-927 (NH-927) is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing trade and economic cooperation between India and Nepal. Recently approved by the Union Cabinet, the project aims to improve connectivity to the strategically important Rupaidiha Land Port and Nepalgunj, one of the busiest cross-border trade routes between the two neighbouring countries.
The highway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Barabanki and Bahraich from around 150 minutes to just 75 minutes, while increasing average vehicle speeds from 40 kmph to 80 kmph. This improved connectivity will facilitate faster movement of goods, reduce transportation costs and improve supply chain efficiency.
Agricultural products such as rice, wheat, vegetables, dairy products and livestock feed form a major portion of trade through this corridor. Faster transportation is expected to minimize spoilage of perishable goods, benefiting farmers, traders and consumers on both sides of the border. The project will also support the seamless movement of medicines, consumer goods and other essential commodities.
Beyond trade, the highway is expected to stimulate economic growth by creating opportunities in logistics, warehousing, transport services and retail businesses. It will also improve access to healthcare, education and markets for communities in border districts, making it a transformative infrastructure project for the region.
