India’s railway network is not just a lifeline for millions of people; it is also becoming an important part of the country’s journey towards cleaner and smarter transport. The latest progress in railway electrification is a matter of national pride and shows what can be achieved through clear goals and steady work.
Today, 99.6 per cent of India’s broad gauge railway network is electrified. This places Indian Railways among the most electrified major railway systems in the world, second only to Switzerland. It is a remarkable change that reflects the growing strength of India’s infrastructure.
What makes this achievement especially important is the speed at which electrification has expanded. Since 2014, more than 48,000 route kilometres have been electrified. New railway lines and multi-tracking projects are also being planned with electrification as an important part of the process.
The benefits go beyond railway operations. Electric trains can help reduce the use of diesel, lower carbon emissions and support India’s clean energy goals. Indian Railways is also increasing its use of renewable energy, with solar and wind power projects adding another green dimension to this transformation.
Electrification can also support better railway performance by allowing higher hauling capacity, faster movement and improved efficiency. For passengers and businesses, this can contribute to a stronger and more reliable transport network.
India’s railway journey has always been closely linked with the nation’s growth. The move towards near-complete electrification shows that this journey is now also connected with sustainability. Indian Railways is not simply moving people and goods; it is helping move India towards a cleaner, more energy-efficient future.
