Hanoi is taking significant steps towards a more sustainable future by transforming construction and demolition waste into valuable resources through circular economy practices. As rapid urban development continues across the Vietnamese capital, the amount of construction waste has increased considerably, placing pressure on landfills and the environment. Instead of treating this waste as a disposal problem, city authorities and development partners are promoting recycling and reuse as practical solutions.
The initiative focuses on processing materials such as concrete, bricks and asphalt into recycled aggregates that can be used in road construction, infrastructure projects and new buildings. This approach reduces the demand for virgin raw materials, lowers carbon emissions and minimizes landfill waste while supporting sustainable urban growth.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has highlighted that adopting circular economy principles can unlock economic opportunities, create green jobs and strengthen resource efficiency. Success, however, depends on stronger policies, investment in recycling facilities, improved waste segregation and greater collaboration between government agencies, businesses and the construction industry.
