Fadnavis Declares BDD Chawl Redevelopment an Essential Project

Date:

The BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project in Mumbai has been declared an “essential project” by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. During a high-level review meeting on key infrastructure developments in Mumbai, Thane and Pune, Fadnavis directed that the project must be completed on priority without any administrative delays or funding issues.

According to the government’s updated schedule, the redevelopment work at Naigaon is targeted for completion by June 2029, Worli by May 2029 and N.M. Joshi Marg by June 2031. This special status ensures the project receives top priority in funding, approvals and coordination across departments, making it a flagship urban renewal initiative for Mumbai.

Fadnavis also stressed the use of modern construction technologies and 24×7 work shifts to accelerate the pace of development. He instructed officials to resolve land clearance and rehabilitation issues swiftly to prevent further delays. The BDD Chawl redevelopment is one of the most ambitious housing projects in the city, aimed at providing modern living spaces to thousands of families currently residing in dilapidated structures.

This move signifies a larger push by the state government to fast-track major urban projects and improve citizens’ living conditions. By giving the BDD Chawl project “essential” status, the government intends to treat housing redevelopment as a core part of infrastructure development, on par with roads and metro projects, ensuring faster delivery and greater transparency for Mumbai’s residents.
