India’s announcement of its first “hydrogen highway” is a moment of pride and promise for all. This effort marks a forward leap in our journey toward cleaner mobility, especially for long-distance trucks that move goods across our vast land. The plan is to build hydrogen fueling stations along key national highway corridors so that hydrogen-powered vehicles can travel long stretches without worry.
Why is this such good news? First, hydrogen is a clean fuel, when used in fuel cells, it emits only water vapor, not smoke or carbon. This means the air alongside highways, cities and towns will become healthier. Second, for the trucking and logistics sector, long hauls are critical. If trucks can run on hydrogen instead of diesel, we reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
This project also showcases India’s leadership in green energy innovation. We are sending a clear message: we can build modern infrastructure and adopt futuristic technologies. It will attract investment, spur jobs in new sectors and bring together research, industry and government towards one common goal.
Of course, building hydrogen highways is not easy; setting up stations, ensuring supply, safety and demand all have to come together. But India has shown time and again that when we commit, we deliver.
