India is accelerating its efforts to make road travel safer, with the goal of reducing road fatalities to zero by 2030, announced by Union Road Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
As per a recent report from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, road accidents rose by 4.2% in 2023, with approximately 20 people dying every hour on the roads. To counter this alarming trend, the government has launched the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan (Road Safety Campaign), in collaboration with private players like Zomato and Uber, aiming to shift focus from speed to safety.
Gadkari emphasized that road safety is not just about infrastructure or engineering, human behaviour, awareness and community participation are equally crucial.Zomato and Uber will support the campaign by integrating safety messaging and responsible driving practices via their platforms.
The initiative reflects a broader strategy: combining regulatory action, public-private partnerships and citizen engagement to change how people think about road use. By mobilizing multiple stakeholders and reinforcing the idea that safety must come before speed, India aims to halve road accidents by 2030 and pave the way to zero road fatalities.
