500 GW Renewable Goal: India Needs Faster and Smarter Grid Expansion

Date:

India’s power transmission network will need major upgrades and smarter planning to support the country’s ambitious renewable energy goals and rising electricity demand. A recent report by management consulting firm Kearney highlights the need for a more flexible, digitally enabled and better-coordinated transmission system as India targets 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The report notes that peak electricity demand is expected to reach 459 GW by FY2036, increasing pressure on the transmission network. Key challenges include weak coordination between central and state utilities, slower progress in transmission projects compared with renewable generation, underutilisation of existing assets and delays caused by land, regulatory and right-of-way issues.

Supply-chain constraints, including shortages of transformers and high-voltage conductors, are also affecting project execution. The report recommends long-term network planning covering renewable generation, battery storage, pumped hydro and changing demand patterns.

Kearney has proposed a five-pillar framework that includes better asset utilisation, corridor-based project delivery, strategic equipment procurement and greater adoption of digital technologies. Dynamic line-rating systems, real-time monitoring and digital project management could help improve grid visibility and operational efficiency.

With India already crossing 300 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, strengthening transmission infrastructure will be critical to ensuring that new renewable generation can be efficiently integrated and delivered to consumers.
