48 National Highway Failures Raise Questions Over Construction Standards

Date:

India’s ambitious highway expansion programme has significantly improved connectivity and boosted economic growth. However, recent reports highlighting 48 cases of national highway failures since 2021 have raised serious concerns about construction quality, project monitoring and long-term durability.

The reported failures include road cave-ins, damaged embankments, cracks in bridges and retaining walls and other structural deficiencies. While many of these incidents were linked to factors such as heavy rainfall, landslides and difficult terrain, authorities have also acknowledged that poor workmanship, design shortcomings and inadequate supervision contributed to several cases.

In response, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have strengthened inspection mechanisms, imposed penalties on defaulting contractors and ordered corrective measures wherever required. The government has also emphasised the adoption of modern construction technologies, stricter quality audits and regular maintenance to improve the durability of highway infrastructure.

As India continues investing heavily in road infrastructure, ensuring construction quality remains just as important as achieving project completion targets. Better engineering practices, stronger accountability and continuous monitoring can help minimise structural failures while improving road safety and public confidence.

The focus now extends beyond building more highways—it is about building highways that remain safe, resilient and reliable for decades to come.
