The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has announced a new energy infrastructure initiative at the Haldia Dock Complex, where East Horizon will set up a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with an estimated investment of around ₹260 crore.
A licence agreement for the project was signed on March 6, 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening the port’s LNG handling capacity. An FSRU is a specialised offshore vessel or terminal that receives liquefied natural gas (LNG) from carriers, stores it in liquid form, and converts it back into natural gas through a regasification process before supplying it to onshore pipelines.
Although detailed technical specifications and the capacity of the facility have not yet been disclosed, the unit will support the import, storage, and regasification of LNG, contributing to the strengthening of India’s natural gas supply chain.
According to SMPK, the project represents an important move toward expanding LNG infrastructure in Eastern India. It also aligns with the government’s vision of increasing the share of natural gas in the country’s energy mix. The initiative is expected to encourage the adoption of cleaner fuels, enhance energy security, and further strengthen the port’s role in supporting sustainable industrial development in the region.
