Odisha partners with IRC to upgrade road infrastructure across the state

Date:

The state of Odisha is taking a major step forward in modernising its road infrastructure with the support of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC). According to the state Minister, the partnership is intended to elevate the quality, safety and durability of upcoming road-works across the region.

Under this collaboration, the IRC will offer technical guidance, updated standards and best-practice frameworks for road construction and maintenance in the state. The move is a response to rising transportation demands as Odisha accelerates economic activity and connects more remote areas with its urban centres.

Officials say the effort will not only improve vehicular mobility and reduce travel time, but will also bring greater uniformity in road-engineering protocols, something widely expected to raise the long-term performance of the state’s road network. For Odisha, which is advancing multiple infrastructure projects and aims to enhance regional connectivity, the step signals its ambitions to align with national-level benchmarks in road planning and execution.

The Minister emphasised that leveraging institutional expertise from a body like the IRC helps the government avoid common pitfalls in road projects—such as premature deterioration, inadequate drainage, sub-optimal pavement design or weak signage—thereby optimising public funds and delivering more value to citizens. With the formal assistance now in place, observers believe Odisha is positioning itself to achieve a higher standard of road infrastructure and improved citizen mobility in the years ahead.
